The southern Bay Area has some of the state’s most incredible hiking. Lace up your boots and explore our four favorite hiking trails near Santa Clara, CA.

Central Park Loop

This Santa Clara trail is a good starting point for beginning hikers. The paved trail covers about 1.8 miles around the lake, and it’s mostly flat. You can also bring leashed dogs along for the walk.

Central Park is located at 969 Kiely Blvd. It’s open from 6 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset and features an amphitheater, basketball and tennis courts, picnic facilities, and a playground. This 52-acre city park also has ​the Avenue of Flags Veterans Memorial, and it’s the home of the Central Park Library.

Seven Springs Loop

You can hike this 2.8-mile trail at Fremont Older Open Space Preserve in Cupertino, about 10 miles from Santa Clara. The Seven Springs Loop offers a bit of a challenge with 557 feet of elevation. It’s a shaded route where you can spot birds and other wildlife, as well as an abundance of wildflowers in the spring. Leashed dogs are welcome at the preserve.

To access the Seven Springs Loop, park at the Prospect Parking Area just off Prospect Rd past the Saratoga Country Club. Keep an eye out for mountain bikers, who share this multi-use trail.

Stephen E. Abbors Trail

For breathtaking views of the entire Bay Area, take this 3.7-mile trail at Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve in Cupertino. You’ll climb 1,600 feet up the Black Mountain, and you can even connect with the nearby Upper High Meadow or Wildcat Canyon trails for a longer loop. Along the way, you may spot deer, wild turkey, lizards, raptors, and many other native species.

Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve is open from 8 a.m. to sunset seven days a week. The preserve has 25 miles of trails to explore, so you’ll likely find yourself returning for repeat visits. It’s located at 22500 Cristo Rey Dr.

San Tomas Aquino/Saratoga Creek Trail

This Santa Clara trail spans nearly 8 miles in four sections that run from the San Francisco Bay Trail at SR-237 to Pruneridge Avenue. You can park to access the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail at the Tasman Parking Garage, 2525 Tasman Dr.

In addition to beautiful water views, this trail lets you explore Santa Clara’s residential neighborhoods. It also offers a connection point to the hundreds of miles of connected trails that loop through the communities around the San Francisco Bay.
